#McEwanAllAccess 4.0 Wrap-Up

After the success of past events, #McEwanAllAccess 4.0 was highly anticipated, and did not disappoint! On November 10, 20 lucky foodies met at One Restaurant for an exclusive, invite-only meet, eat and tweet with Celebrity Chef Mark McEwan.

Co-hosted by television personality Michelle Jobin, it was an evening full of opportunity to savour delicious food and drinks while mingling with fellow foodies and chatting one-on-one with Chef McEwan himself.

The luxurious, yet cozy atmosphere of One Restaurant’s bar lounge was just perfect for guests to sip Stoneleigh Vineyards wines. Cocktails featuring Johnnie Walker, Grand Marnier & Ciroc were the ideal compliments while sampling such signature McEwan favourites such as Pork Belly Steamed Buns, Steak Tartare and Blue Crab and Avocado Spoons.

We also saw lots of tweets and Instagram photos of the evening that were shared by the guests with their fans and followers online.

Everyone were given their very own copy of “Great Food at Home” and then sat down with Mark for a personalized book signing, and to take a few selfies with the Chef. At the end of the evening, guests departed with a gift bag that was full of foodie favourites, including wine from Stoneleigh Vineyards, and of course memories of a great event.

Groundhog Day Challenge 2014

Many little piggys rolled all the way home from #GroundHogChallenge at Richmond Station on Monday night. In the 5th year of the competition, guests were treated to a total of 9…yes 9 courses of pork, from 7 chefs vying for the glory and the trophy from this year’s event plus a charcuterie plate and a bacon, pumpkin seed tart prepared by Carl Heinrich and his team.

The chefs battling for pork supremacy included Ted Corrado from The Drake 150, Nicholas Marragau from Bar Boulud, Alex Molitz (Farmhouse tavern), Tara Besignano (Skin and Bones), Jesse Vallins from The Saint, Albert Ponzo from Le Select and Teo Paul of Union.  They all faced an esteemed panel of judges, from Chris McDonald, the founder of the event, to Nial McCotter (Auberge du Pommier), Suresh Doss of Zagat, Karon Liu from The Grid and Liora Ipsum from BlogTO, Michael di Caro (Spotlight), David Ort (Food with Legs) as well as Chef and Owner of The McEwan Group and Head Judge of Top Chef Canada, Mark McEwan.

At 6:00pm the dishes started to come out of the kitchen, in the spirit of competition, all the chefs helped plate each other’s meals… this also made it difficult to discern which plate came from which chef in the open concept kitchen.

All the tasting was done blind, with Ryan Donovan of Richmond Station giving the explanations of the plates as they arrived in front of the diners and the judges were sequestered to maintain the anonymity of the plate’s creator.

A who’s who of the restaurant industry devoured course after course. Judging each menu item on taste, presentation and “ham factor” (each dish was required to contain 50% pork).

By the end of the evening the judges crowned chef Nicholas Marragau from Bar Boulud as the 2014 champion! His “Black and White”, an artfully plated pork boudon blanc and blood sausage, was also voted as the crowd’s favourite.

#McEwanAllAccess 2.0 Wrap-Up

The second instalment of #McEwanAllAccess is proof Mark Mcewan wants to get to know you.  Mark’s team set out again, solely on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to source a select group that would enjoy a rare evening with Chef McEwan and further explore the night’s theme, Italian cuisine.

The guests, hosted at Fabbrica, were delighted to be up close & personal with Mark. And, in unique fashion, Mark answered questions from his fans and followers on Twitter which were centered around one of our favourite tweets captured by @StephenDaCambra:

@StephenDaCambra  “The Italian kitchen will fool you with how simple it is.” @Chef_McEwan #McEwanAllAccess @inyourmouthTO

Of course he also spent time with every guest in the beautiful Fabbrica lounge over some lovely wines and fan favourite dishes like the insanely simple margherita pizza, short rib stuffed arancini and duck bresola.

Guests raved and reciprocated on Twitter & Instagram:

@YYZGourmand The inspiration for my salami room is my friends in Woodbridge – @Chef_MarkMcEwan #McEwanAllAccess

@HotTorontoDeals At Fabbrica’s #McEwanAllAccess with Mark sharing his insights and very personable. Thanks @Chef_MarkMcEwan. #toronto

@sexyfoodtherapy  Big thx to @Chef_MarkMcEwan for a wonderful eve for the #mcewanallaccess. Psssst Godfather II still trumps Godfather I

@brian_woodland  With @Chef_MarkMcEwan of @themcewangroup #McEwanAllAccess such a sincere, amazing guy. And the food. Wow.

This round of #McEwanAllAccess also provided each guest with a copy of the newly rebranded Rustic Italian cookbook. Of course, Mark signed each one, offering some valuable one on one time.

It was a unique experience, with an approachable and laid back Mark who reminds us that many dishes, especially with Italian should be about simplicity, expressed through the quality of ingredients.

Bymark #LiquidLab Series

Nothing sets the tone for a successful dinner party like a signature cocktail when your guests arrive. But to get creative with your liquor cabinet, you’ve first got to get the basics of mixology down; and where better to learn than at one of Toronto’s most famous after-work drinking spots?

Bymark’s #LiquidLab is a series of evenings hosted by Matt Bryan, bartender extraordinaire hand-picked by Mark McEwan to keep Bay Street’s collective glass full. Matt is one part of a partnership duo that create the cocktail list for all the restaurants in The McEwan Group, catering to the trends and traditions of classic and contemporary cocktails.

Starting with a different bottle each time, you’ll learn what makes a particular libation special, what flavours go best with it and how to think beyond the basics.

The once a month series includes evenings dedicated to:

July 13.2013 – Bourbon- “A Night in Kentucky”

September 28.2013 – Gin- “Juniper and Jazz”

October 26.2013 – Rum- “The Pirates of Downtown”

November 23.2013 – Scotch- “Scotch, I love Scotch

December 14.2013 – Tequila- “Appreciating Agave”

January 18.2014 – Vodka- “Exploring Infusions”

In addition to being greeted with a cocktail and delicious appetizers as you arrive, Matt will take you through the history of the featured alcohol, you’ll have a hands on tutorial, speak about which foods pair well with it and enjoy a third cocktail mixed by Matt during a question and answer period.

You’ll leave with the recipes for the three cocktails you enjoyed, as well as a special gift to enhance your bar at home.

#LiquidLab is great for a group of friends, a couple who like to host together or just an individual with interest in the most potent of potables. $80 includes everything for the evening right down to taxes and gratuities. Book by contacting Bymark directly at Bymark@bellnet.ca.

#McEwanAllAccess 1.0

Ever had a question you feel that only Chef Mark McEwan could answer? A question about how he keeps his restaurants successful for so long, if he would ever buy a food truck or his opinions on the burgeoning Toronto culinary scene?  Well, maybe you can ask him yourself in person.

We are happy to share that this April at his flagship restaurant, North 44, Chef Mark McEwan will be hosting an intimate, limited space cocktail event we are calling #McEwanAllAccess. The goal is to provide his fans and followers a chance to meet him in person, ask those burning questions and get to know who he really is beyond the Top Chef Canada personality we all see on The Food Network.

We are equally excited to have Buzzing and Branding putting this event on and have enlisted Ken Samuel from In Your Mouth Toronto to help us curate the conversation both at the event and online.

But why the event and this format you may ask? It seems Mark has decided that if his customers are using social to communicate, then that is where he needs to be as well. Mark shared his thoughts with Ken at the recent Chefs Challenge held at the Fairmont hotel“This will be my first Twitter party … now let’s cook this bird.”

So what can you expect as a guest at #McEwanAllAccess? You would arrive to North 44 donning your killer outfit, be escorted to the beautiful North 44 private dining space, be offered a craft cocktail or glass of wine and be in introduced to the other guests. Half-way through your drink Mark McEwan will arrive and when he greets you, you could spark a conversation with him about food trends, pause to partake in some of the amazing dishes being passed around, take some pictures of the food with your camera, take pictures with Mark and Tweet, Pin or Instagram to your heart’s content.

You could even ask your own social followings what they would like you to ask Mark and share his responses via Twitter, Facebook or post. We heard Ken Samuel will do this through his In Your Mouth Toronto Twitter account and it sounds like a great opportunity for his following. However, it is really up to you how you as a guest would like to use the time and we look forward to being part of the conversation.

Are you interested in being a guest at #McEwanAllAccess?  If so then TWEET this:
